Overview

The Youth Policy Institute YouthSource and Education Department provides 16-24 year old, out-of-school youth with the opportunity to re-engage in secondary education, paid work experience, and assistance addressing barriers. The YouthSource College & Career Specialist is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of college awareness, career exploration, trade union/apprenticeship requirements, vocational training, and military career workshops and projects as implemented through the YouthSource program. The College & Career Specialist will work directly with YouthSource participants to develop their post-YouthSource placement track using the YouthSource Individual Service Strategy (ISS). The College & Career Specialist will assist participants with obtaining and maintaining post-YouthSource placements.

Responsibilities

  • Complete Career/College Plans and other documentation following program policies and protocols.
  • Assist in development and coordination of special assignments and programs.
  • Coordinate programming in areas that include employment, post-secondary, military, apprenticeship/unions, advanced training, and corps programs through workshops, events, individual and small group counseling, classroom presentations.
  • Ensure that youth are prepared for, and connected to the appropriate educational or employment opportunities.  Ensuring accurate, up-to-date information is provided to youth regarding college access, financial aid and career planning.
  • Assist with placement in education track or employment.
  • Help create a resource library of information on education and training programs, internships, and other post-program opportunities.
  • On occasion, meet participant and/or families in a variety of settings including but not limited to: schools, worksites, home, court, other community based organizations.
  • Meet individual and programmatic benchmarks and outputs.
  • Attend/coordinate community events, forums, and other events that relate to the goals and objects of the program participate in staff meetings and trainings.
  • Maintain open communication with the YouthSource team including regular updates and attendance at YouthSource meetings.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with students, parents, school, community, worksites, and partners.
  • Report all data into JobsLA database, when applicable, and other data collection sources in a timely manner.
  • Complete required reports and update Program Manager in a weekly, bi-weekly, and/or monthly basis.
  • Participate in staff meetings, monthly trainings, department programs, professional development trainings as required.
  • Follow staff program manual as well as enforce youth program manual.
  • Maintain a professional attitude, confidentiality, and respect cultural differences.
  • Handle crisis and/or emergency situations as needed.
  • Complete all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling or related area.
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience providing direct services to students and parents, multicultural populations or under-prepared students.
  • Two (2) years working in a non-profit organization environment.
  • Experience working with youth from at-risk environments, ages 16-24.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with school personnel, after school personnel, program officers, evaluators, parents, students and community professionals.
  • Demonstrated competency with record-keeping, documentation and data management.
  • Ability to teach service delivery skills to volunteers, interns, peer mentors, and College Ambassadors.
  • Expertise in program design and ability to decision making regarding participant service delivery and liability.
  • Ability to provide leadership and coordination of day-to-day programming.
  • Must have independent judgment and problem solving ability.
  • Ability to work under only general supervision, self-starter, ability to multi-task.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to make group presentations and facilitate group activities.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision, prioritize multiple tasks, manage competing priorities, meet deadlines—all with attention to detail.
  • Superior computer and organizational skills with significant experience in Microsoft Office and Google Drive.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation to arrive to work site at scheduled time consistently and for frequent travel between sites. If applicable, will be required to present current California driver license, proof of acceptable driving record (DMV H-6 printout), and liability auto insurance.
  • Ability to travel between sites for meetings and business purposes.
  • Must pass a criminal background check (Livescan fingerprinting), with both the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), prior to beginning employment.
  • Must present proof of negative Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux) prior to beginning employment dated within 60 days.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation.  If applicable, will be required to provide proof of current California driver license, acceptable driving record (current DMV H6 printout), and current liability auto insurance.
