YPI is seeking a Development Associate for its Development Department, which oversees fundraising activities for the organization. The Development Associate will provide support primarily with grant writing, with some additional responsibilities. The Development Associate will report to YPI's Senior Development Associate, and work closely with the Director of Grants Development, Chief Development Officer, and Chief Grants Officer to align funding opportunities with programmatic needs.

This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate, as he or she will learn grant writing and fundraising skills of great demand in the nonprofit field. The Development Associate will work with and learn from a successful fundraising team regarding requirements for effective proposals.


  • Assist with development of funding proposals to federal, state, county, city, and private funders (estimated 80% of time):
    • Review requests for proposals for fit with YPI services
    • Conduct background research on secondary data sources, such as the US Census, American Community Survey, Esri Community Analyst, CA Department of Education's DataQuest, Los Angeles Unified School District, State of CA Employment Development Department, LA County Dept. of Public Health, and others.
    • Conduct background research on best practices in the field to inform program design
    • Outreach and collect information from YPI program staff to inform grant proposal
    • Write grant narratives
    • Produce supporting documentation for grant proposals, including logic models, citations, timelines, management plans, partnership letters
    • Edit narrative drafts for accuracy, completeness, and clarity; ensure proposals address all grant requirements
    • Copy, collate, and mail hard copy proposals
  • Conduct research on potential funding sources.
  • Prepare letters of inquiry and other correspondence.
  • Liaise with external funding agencies, schools, and partner organizations, including site visits.
  • Represent YPI at bidders' conferences and grant info sessions.
  • Develop working relationships with YPI staff members and strong understanding of the organization's mission, goals, and program.
  • Participate in educational conference calls and webinars to gain information on evidence-based programs, best practices, and innovations to apply in grant proposals.
  • Assist with developing Annual Report and other special projects as needed.
  • Support with special events, including annual fundraising gala and smaller fundraising events like LA Marathon and Taste of Spring.


  • Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred.
  • Writing experience required (sample requested, does not need to be grant writing).
  • Must provide a writing sample.
  • Experience with grant writing or other fundraising activities preferred.
  • Ability to gather, analyze, and evaluate a variety of data preferred.
  • Knowledge of grant application process.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills.
  • Outstanding attention to detail.
  • Self-directed and independent work style.
  • Thrives in fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to prioritize and work under multiple deadlines.
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Internet research. Experience with GIS mapping is a plus.
  • Knowledge of state, city, and federal grant guidelines preferred.
