Overview

The Public Safety Manager will oversee the planning and coordination efforts for the implementation of the Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation program in the MacArthur Park area. The Public Safety Manager will also work to align these efforts to the Los Angeles Promise Zone public safety strategies. These strategies include, but are not limited to, environmental design approaches to crime prevention, activation of public spaces to build community cohesion, school based public safety and mobility approaches, and restorative justice approaches. The Public Safety Manager will be responsible for engaging and convening key community stakeholders through formal working groups, managing partnerships with external organizations and public agencies, implementing key programs and strategies, gathering and reporting on public safety data, and increasing awareness of services and programs to community members in order to meet grant outcomes, managing grant outcomes and funds. In addition, the Public Safety Manager will support the alignment between these efforts and other complimentary efforts led by external partners. The Manager will also work closely with other YPI departments and programs to align public safety programs and efforts, including the Promise Neighborhood and the Los Angeles Promise Zone. Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Justice through September 30, 2020.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, develop and implement a year long community engagement effort to develop a public safety plan for the MacArthur Park area and surrounding neighborhood.
  • Develop the planning year design and workplan in partnership with YPI Chief Communty Development Officer, Director of Research and Evaluation, and project research partner.
  • Keep proper documentation of all program convenings, qualitative and quantitative data gathered, and planning efforts and findings.
  • Work with the project research partner and YPI’s Research and Evaluation team to coordinate and lead on the ground community surveys, focus groups and other data gathering efforts for a full community assessment.
  • Plan, coordinate, manage and facilitate YPI’s public safety workgroup aligning the Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation grant and the Los Angeles Promise Neighborhood public safety strategies.
  • Develop, maintain and strengthen community partnership relationships and serves as liaison with community leaders, community organizations, school leadership, and public agencies and residents to encourage participation and to sustain interest in the project.
  • Develop program year 2 and 3 implementation plan and work plans to ensure key strategies are implemented and partners and stakeholders are engaged.
  • Manage subcontracts ensuring key outcomes are met and appropriate data and documentation is gathered for all reports.
  • Oversee development of program brochures, flyers and communication documents in partnership with YPI’s Communication team.
  • Identify additional funding and resources to help advance the public safety work of YPI and the Byrne Criminal Justice and Promise Zone initiatives.
  • Prepare and collect reporting data and key information in a timeline matter to submit completed reports.
  • Represent YPI at meetings and events as it relates to public safety issues.
  • Meet with Chief Community Development Officer regularly to ensure program outcomes and goals are met in a timely manner.
  • Manage program budget ensuring fiscal efficiencies and allowable spending to meet program outcomes.
  • Assist with other program administrative duties as needed.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university required, preferably in urban studies, public policy, political science, community development (or comparable), or related public safety field required; advanced degree preferred.
  • 3 years of management experience required.
  • Commitment to social and economic justice including community organizing, human rights, community development and empowerment.
  • Knowledge of public safety, crime prevention, and restorative justice programs highly preferred.
  • Excellent inter-group, communication, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision.
  • Punctuality and professionalism critical.
  • Self-starter, enthusiastic and flexible.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, Google Mail, Google Docs and both PC and Macintosh platforms.
  • Bilingual Spanish preferred.
  • Must pass a criminal background check (Live Scan fingerprinting) prior to beginning employment.
  • Must present proof of being free of active Tuberculosis (TB) prior to beginning employment. All TB clearances must be conducted no more than 60 days prior to start of employment.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation.  If applicable, will be required to provide proof of current California driver license, acceptable driving record (current DMV H6 printout), and current liability auto insurance.
