Overview

The Youth Policy Institute is currently seeking a part-time Promotor/a for its Local Roots LA Program. Local Roots LA will supplement YPI’s existing health and wellness programs that empower Los Angeles residents to make healthier choices.  Culturally relevant programming will be provided to 1,500 primarily Latino adults living in Hollywood, East Hollywood, Koreatown, and Pico Union/Westlake.  Activities will be aimed at both preventing and addressing health behaviors that result in becoming overweight or obese, and put residents at risk for many chronic diseases.

 

A key component of this program is the use of Promotor/as who will: teach nutrition workshops, lead cooking demonstrations in mobile kitchens, assisting clients with enrollment into YPI CSA program and Cal-Fresh benefits. Local Roots LA Promotor/a will support with conducting cooking demonstrations to  ensure that CSA participants are equipped with cooking skills and healthy recipes to fully utilize their CSA share each week. Promotoras will use Cooking Matters' free Cooking Demo Toolkit developed by nutrition experts to lead activities that demonstrate why foods are healthy or unhealthy.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in organizing, conducting and participating in outreach activities to schedule nutrition education workshops in schools and community centers.
  • Support with the delivery of nutrition education classes and cooking demonstrations
  • Conduct internal outreach to YPI’s H&W staff to schedule workshops and cooking demonstrations as part of other programming
  • Engage community members and stakeholders to participate in ongoing YPI community events
  • Facilitate participant enrollment and assessment as needed for YPI CSA program and Cal-Fresh benefits
  • Develop and cultivate relationships with parents, students and community members
  • Attend staff meetings and professional development trainings and/or workshops
  • Empower and encourage families to make use of all available resources; refer families to appropriate YPI staff and/or services
  • Will be required to travel between work sites to attend trainings, meetings, etc.
  • Additional duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High School diploma/equivalent preferred
  • 1-3 years experience working in a community setting or non-profit sector
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and basic computer knowledge
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Previous experience with nutrition education, cooking demonstrations, and delivery of educational workshops related to nutrition, cooking, healthy eating habits, etc.
  • Demonstrate ability to work with diverse groups, commitment to building relationships with schools, families and the community
  • Bilingual (Spanish) required
  • Access to reliable transportation to travel between work sites
  • Must have reliable transportation and valid CA drivers license

Part-time; 20 hours a week; must be available evenings and weekends.
