Overview

The Youth Policy Institute is currently seeking a Community School Coordinator for its Promise Zone Full Service Community Schools Program (PZ FSCS). The PZ FSCS program is a place-based program that encourages coordination of academic, social, and health services through partnerships between (1) public elementary and secondary schools; (2) the schools’ local educational agencies (LEAs); and (3) community-based organizations, nonprofit organizations, and other public or private entities. The purpose of this collaboration is to provide comprehensive academic, social, and health services for students, students’ family members, and community members that will result in improved educational outcomes for children. Specifically, the PZ FSCS program will benefit the students, parents and community members from the following four schools: Lockwood Elementary School, Alexandria Elementary School, Los Angeles Academy of Arts & Enterprise (LAAAE), Virgil Middle School. 

 

The Community School Coordinator will support with coordination of existing programs and services at one of the schools listed above. They will also develop, implement, and oversee new programs and services based on the school’s needs. The Community School Coordinator will be housed at one particular school site and support the entire school community to improve students’ academic outcomes, increase parent and community involvement, coordinate outreach efforts and monitor participation in all services, as well as assist families in receiving the necessary resources. They will supervise a Community Advocate part time at their site. 

 

Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. 

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day operations and oversight of LAPN programs and its main functions.
  • May be responsible for supervision of  on-site part-time tutors and/or full-time AmeriCorps members
  • Conduct staff performance evaluations on a yearly basis (if applicable)
  • Provide direction, guidance, support, and coaching to on-site staff to develop collaborative solutions should challenges arise
  • Review, approve, and submit timesheets and time off requests by the payroll deadline (if applicable)
  • Submit all required documentation on a timely basis, including attendance,, permission forms, and surveys.
  • Follow school and YPI procedures and policies for safe program operation.
  • Maintain and manage documentation relating to staff performance issues; provide guidance to staff as needed.
  • Adhere to workplace safety guidelines.
  • Report workplace injuries via appropriate forms.
  • Maintain strong working relationship with school administrators, teachers, school staff, students and families to determine ongoing needs of school community.
  • Develop, maintain, and publicize a schedule of programs and activities offered at the school
  • Work with school administrators, other YPI staff, and partners to develop and update a School Site Plan that outlines services and programs based on grant outcomes.
  • Responsible for program implementation, ensure all services on site are aligned to school and grant outcomes.
  • Be familiar with all subcontracted partner MOU’s and oversee successful implementation of services.
  • Responsible for distribution and collection of all participant consent forms and YPI waivers.
  • Coordinate and facilitate monthly collaborative meetings with YPI staff, school personnel and community partners to align programming to grant outcomes.
  • Collaborate with Assistant Director of Community Schools, school administration, data staff, and other programs to create school performance measures.
  • Analyze performance measures, school results data (internal and external) and/or program quality to determine the successful implementation of programs and meet program outcomes.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact between staff, school administration, other YPI programs and community partners.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a process that promotes referrals to programs and services offered at the school and local YPI community centers.
  • Ensure that adequate progress is made towards meeting grant outcomes.
  • Facilitate parent and student workshops, as needed.
  • Maintain constant communication with Assistant Director of Community Schools, as it relates to program progress, successes and/or challenges.
  • Coordinate the collection and input of evaluation data into database system.
  • Conduct monthly meeting with data specialist to review program progress and accurate collection of data.
  • Organize and attend various school meetings and other outreach and grant related events (program culminations, press events, open houses, community events, etc).
  • Data entry of student and/or parent information on service tracking database.
  • Actively participate in site level work group meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in education, social service or related field preferred. Commensurate work experience in community development, education, social/human service, public school system and/or volunteer work field may substitute for education requirement.
  • Proven track record in achieving results in working in youth development, academic enrichment and/or family support programs.
  • 2- years’ experience in a supervisory role
  • 1-2 years minimum experience collecting, inputting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data to drive program results, strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with and leading community partnerships.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with various stakeholders such as administrators, teachers, parents and students.
  • Self-starter, organized and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to effectively work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgement
  • Ability to multi-task, meet strict deadlines and work under time pressure.
  • Experience working with individuals of diverse ethnic backgrounds.
  • Familiarity working with similar population as service area.
  • Bilingual Spanish and English, strongly preferred.
  • Must be able to work a flexible work schedule (some weekends, some evenings required)
  • Strong computer skills and a complete knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
  • Professional demeanor and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must pass a criminal background check (Livescan fingerprinting), with both the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), prior to beginning employment.
  • Must present proof of negative Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux) prior to beginning employment dated within 60 days.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation to travel between work sites.  If applicable, will be required to provide proof of current California driver license, acceptable driving record (current DMV H6 printout), and current liability auto insurance.
