Youth Policy Institute (YPI) is seeking an Academic instructor for its expanded learning program. The Academic Instructor will, under the direction of the expanded learning site coordinator, plan, organize, present, and provide meaningful instruction to pupils in areas assigned related duties necessary to the successful operation of the expanded learning after school program. Responsibilities will include, but not limited to:



  • Supervise and facilitate activities with groups of twenty students.
  • Provide instruction in relevant subject matter and prepare weekly lesson plans that align with the California State Standards.
  • Develop and maintains a classroom environment conducive to effective learning.
  • Must maintain accurate daily attendance records and ensure that students sign in and sign out each day.
  • Assists pupils and administrators to set, establish, and maintain acceptable school and classroom behavior and standards.
  • Apply a wide variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided.
  • Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect pupils, equipment, materials, and school plan.
  • Provide continuous assessment of pupil progress consistent with teacher, school and program established instructional objectives, goals, and policy.
  • Collaborate with the expanded learning program staff and school day staff to increase student success and quality of program.
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with parents, students, counselors, teachers, and administration.
  • Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials within the program.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, and administration.
  • Represent the mission of YPI at every site.
  • Adhere to YPI Code of Conduct.
  • Adhere to workplace safety guidelines.
  • Attend all required staff meetings and events on and off-site.
  • Attend all mandated weekday and weekend trainings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Liberal Arts, Education and/or closely related field.
  • Three years experience in an after school setting.
  • Appropriate single subject California Teaching Credential (Preliminary/ Clear).
  • Knowledge of principles of coaching and team- building.
  • Ability to build, shape, and guide students into becoming contributing members of society.
  • Knowledge of school and program organization, operations, policies, and objectives.
  • Ability to engage students in program activity.
  • Must be able to interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Outstanding analytical skills and ability to create effective course of action.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bilingual (English/ Spanish) a plus.
  • CPR/ First Aid certification a plus.
  • Must pass criminal background check (Livescan fingerprinting) prior to beginning employment.
  • Must present proof of negative Tuberculosis skin test (TB) prior to beginning employment dated within 60 days.
