Overview

The Director of Communications will develop and implement effective strategies to tell YPI's story in an effective and engaging manner to appropriate constituents, donors and the press. These strategies will include but are not limited to all media and venues (digital, print, electronic, programs, events and others), with the stated goal of building high quality brand recognition and increasing program engagement and support.
 
The ideal candidate will bring a creative yet practical approach to marketing, with underlying strengths in communication technologies and strategic analysis. He/she will be someone with a disciplined and analytical background who can act quickly in execution. This individual must be an organized and seasoned professional who is an exceptionally gifted communicator, willing to roll up their sleeves, and be comfortable in an entrepreneurial environment. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

Responsibilities

  • Determine strategy and key goals; develop a comprehensive and integrated direction and implementation plan for marketing and outreach.
  • Utilize marketing and internal data to set strategies and goals.
  • Work across program initiatives and use appropriate media to create innovative strategies and campaigns that inspire engagement opportunities and assist in fundraising efforts.
  • Manage media relations and maximize media opportunities.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate an annual communications plan.
  • Create, distribute, and maintain all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, marketing and development materials, annual report, e-newsletters and website.
  • Communicate and work with the senior executive team and leadership on marketing related matters.
  • Provide leadership to and coordinate between departmental staff to ensure that marketing and communication efforts are coordinated, consistent, high quality and engaging.
  • Research, analyze and prepare reports and performance metrics.
  • Establish and enforce policies to ensure a clear, consistent, and powerful message.
  • Manage a team and determine appropriate communications team structure.
  • Refine and enhance brand identities and sharpen messaging organization-wide.
  • Develop and implement campaigns to promote brand recognition and to increase enrollment in YPI programs.
  • Write and develop communication pieces to ensure that YPI's voice is consistent and used appropriately and effectively with target audiences.
  • Identify merchandising opportunities and partnerships that will enhance the organization's brand and programs.
  • Develop and oversee relationship-building events for donors and programs.
  • Oversee growing database of friends and supporters, with strong engagement via social media.
  • Directly manage, create content for, and update the company website (wordpress hosted), email marketing software (Emma), and all social media platforms.
  • Oversee internal staff communications, including regularly updating the company-wide communications intranet page.
  • Required to travel between work sites to attend meetings, events, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree, Masters preferred, plus 7 years experience in communications, press and public relations, ideally in an “in-house” leadership role.
  • Ability to transform knowledge into exciting and useful messages, and disseminate it to the right audiences through the best distribution channels.
  • A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently.
  • Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters.
  • Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives.
  • Strong presence, strategic judgment, and common sense necessary for effective leadership.
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal communication and writing skills.
  • Innovative and critical thinking skills; ability to solve problems.
  • Ability to sell ideas and concepts and work persuasively with colleagues.
  • Deep understanding of family markets, digital advertising and social media tools/opportunities.
  • Demonstrable interest and commitment to the specific vision and mission of the Youth Policy Institute.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation. If applicable, will be required to provide proof of auto insurance (100/300) and present proof of acceptable driving record (current H6 printout).

Technical Requirements

  • Expert in Adobe Suite.
  • Expert in Google Drive.
  • Intermediate to advanced experience with Wordpress.
  • Experience managing and posting to social media platforms.
  • A keen understanding of editorial mapping and direction.
  • Expertise in email marketing platforms (current provider is Emma).
  • A strong understanding of online fundraising.
  • Experience working in the nonprofit sector.
  • Experience hosting and managing full-scale events.
  • Experience editing short-format video content.
  • Spanish fluency is a plus.
