  • Overview

    The ECE Teacher Assistant will be responsible for supporting teachers in all aspects of class instruction, assisting with set-up and take-down of activities (including meals, curricula activities, and others), helping children with personal hygiene tasks, and supporting with classroom management. The ECE teacher assistant will receive direction from the Teacher, Program Manager, and Program Director.


    • Supervises preschool children in developmental learning activities.
    • Supports learning opportunities which are appropriate to the individual needs and developmental levels of children, is anti-bias, and culturally diverse; assists in evaluating the progress of students.
    • Supports a developmentally appropriate learning environment in all classroom and outdoor areas.
    • Supervises the health and safety of children.
    • Organizes and stores material and equipment appropriate to the needs and interests of the students.
    • Maintains a collegial and professional disposition and work environment with teachers and other assistants.
    • Participates in staff development activities and continues professional development.
    • Treats students with dignity and respect; encourages appropriate student behavior and adheres to children’s personal rights.
    • Other duties as assigned.


    Qualifications, Education, and Experience

    • Valid CDA credential. We will also consider applicants who are enrolled in a program leading to an associate or baccalaureate degree or who are enrolled in a CDA credential program to be completed within 2 years of the time of hire.
    • Valid California Child Development Associate Teacher Permit or higher awarded by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing
    • At least 1 years’ experience in a licensed child care and development program, preferably CSPP and/or Head Start
    • Experience working with families from cultural and linguistic diverse populations and children identified as at-risk (foster, homeless, low-income) as well as with special needs
    • Bilingual and biliterate (English/Spanish)
    • Verbal and written fluency in English and Spanish
    • Valid Pediatric CPR & First Aid certification from Red Cross or American Heart Association (Desired)
    • Clear criminal record with the Department of Justice following a fingerprint screening with ability to complete and sign a statement of any pending and prior criminal arrests/charges/convictions related to child sexual abuse, child abuse and neglect, and/or violent felonies.
      • Must pass criminal background check (Live Scan fingerprinting) prior to beginning employment.
    • Successful completion of an initial health examination, performed by or under the supervision of a physician, to determine, at a minimum, if the prospective employee can perform the duties outlined in the position description.
    • Must present documentation of current immunization against influenza, pertussis, and measles. Updated influenza immunization shall be required annually.
    • Proof of the absence of Tuberculosis from a licensed physician or supervised delegate to show that the prospective employee is cleared to work with children and families dated within 60 days prior to hire date.
    • Must have access to reliable transportation to arrive to work site at scheduled time consistently.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics

    • Thorough understanding of child development and the philosophy and methodology of early childhood education as well as changes taking place in the field.
    • Awareness of safety conditions and symptoms of childhood diseases affecting students.
    • Ability to effectively communicate in oral and written form.
    • Ability to properly use and manage all materials, supplies, and equipment utilized in teaching.
    • Ability to work effectively as a member of an early childhood education team with students, parents, staff members, and the community at large in providing a rigorous instructional, suitable educational program.
    • Understanding of the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth patterns of young children.
    • Commitment to anti-bias goals and diversity.
    • Ability to take initiative without close supervision.
    • Ability to function in a fast-paced environment.
    • Task oriented.
    • Ability to use technology for assessments, reports, attendance, and other duties as assigned. (Preferred)
    • Knowledge and familiarity with the California Preschool Learning Foundations and Curriculum Framework, ECERS, CLASS, DRDP (2015), Head Start Program Performance Standards and Early Learning Outcomes Framework, ChildPlus, California ECE Competencies, NAEYC Code of Conduct, Title 22 and Title 5 licensing regulations, and CACFP Meal Guidelines (Preferred).
    • Engagement in professional development and membership in professional organizations. (Preferred)
