  • Overview

    The Youth Policy Institute is currently seeking full-time GEAR UP College Access Advisors for its GEAR UP program. GEAR UP stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, and follows students with programming from their 6th grade year to their first year in college.  The group of GEAR UP schools are a combination of charter, pilot, and traditional LAUSD schools located in the Los Angeles Promise Neighborhood and Promise Zone, whose mission is to transform these communities with a continuum of cradle-to-college-and-career services.
    The GEAR UP College Access Advisor will lead and support with coordination and delivery of programs and services at partner middle and high schools for students, parents and community members.  S/he will work to support GEAR UP students and families through coordinating services, providing direct student and family support, including workshops and 1-on-1 meetings, planning and executing college visits, and providing outreach and services for families to ensure early college awareness.


    Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:


    • Work with students, school staff, and families to address barriers to learning and college access and coordinate appropriate services and referrals.
    • Support the coordination of site-based GEAR UP programming.
    • Determine, implement, and integrate the GEAR UP Program Model.
    • Support in the development and facilitation of training for staff, students, parents, and teachers regarding the GEAR UP program.
    • Collaborate with site administrators, teachers, partners, and other GEAR UP staff to coordinate activities and assure effective program delivery.
    • Keep track of GEAR UP program participation, grades, attendance, and discipline.
    • Monitor student/family participation in GEAR UP programs.
    • Support the GEAR UP School Coordinator with supervision and coaching of GEAR UP Tutors, ensuring that they meet professional, school, and program standards and expectations.
    • Follow program protocols and maintain accurate records as it relates to documenting personnel and facility in-kind match contributions.
    • Facilitate ongoing communication between service providers, teachers, parents and students for increased service access.
    • Ensure that adequate progress is made towards meeting grant indicators and objectives.
    • Facilitate parent and student workshops.
    • Maintain constant communication with GEAR UP School Coordinator and GEAR UP Manager as it relates to program progress, successes and/or challenges.
    • Coordinate college field trips.
    • Coordinate the collection and input of evaluation data used to measure program effectiveness of services and outcome measures.
    • Participate in various school meetings and other outreach and grant related events (program culminations, press events, open houses, community events, etc).
    • Complete data entry of student and parent information on service tracking database.
    • Travel to meetings, school meetings, and trainings as scheduled and required.
    • Adhere to workplace safety guidelines.
    • Implement YPI policies and procedures.
    • Handle other duties as assigned.


    • Bachelor degree plus 2 years minimum experience in community, social/human service, public school system and/or volunteer work.
    • Experience working with youth development, college/career access, youth academic enrichment and family support programs strongly preferred.
    • Experience working with community partnerships and collaboratives.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Strong facilitation skills.
    • Ability to engage youth in activities and coaching conversations.
    • Self-starter, organized and detail-oriented.
    • Ability to work effectively as a team member.
    • Ability to multi-task under, meet strict deadlines and work under time pressure.
    • Experience working with individuals of diverse ethnic backgrounds.
    • Familiarity with the San Fernando Valley and Hollywood area resources.
    • Bilingual Spanish preferred.
    • Strong computer skills and a complete knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
    • Professional demeanor and strong interpersonal skills.
    • Must pass a criminal background check (Livescan fingerprinting), with both the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), prior to beginning employment.
    • Must present proof of negative Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux) prior to beginning employment dated within 60 days.
    • Must have access to reliable transportation to travel between work sites.  If applicable, will be required to provide proof of current California driver license, acceptable driving record (current DMV H6 printout), and current liability auto insurance.
